First Year
The first two weeks of medical school and roller coasters may have more in common than I originally thought.
Don’t get me wrong, I would jump on the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland anytime. I’m talking about the ones that would make a thirty-something-old from Los Angeles, CA think twice. Maybe the Teacups ride, Alice in Wonderland or something of that nature. Surely there’s the giddy excitement of reliving some childhood joy. There's also a lingering sense of self-doubt about your life choices when things start spinning, but you’re strapped in and it’s too late to back out now.
Such is the life of medical school - for me at the moment - and these past six months were packed with highs and lows that will likely make future me giggle.
One of the upper classmates joked during a review session that the cycle goes something like this for each exam block: ‘learn it now, forget (to make room), then learn it again’. While there is truth to this sentiment, the real challenge is sifting the joyful experiences apart from the seemingly endless cascade of back-to-back lectures and required activities, but more on that later.
